Red Sox Select C Blake Swihart at No. 26

With the 26th overall pick in the MLB Draft, the Boston Red Sox selected C Blake Swihart out of Cleveland High School in New Mexico. The Sox definitely addressed a need with this pick by taking Swihart, the best catcher in the draft. With no real stud catcher in the minor league system, Swihart could be the next big thing at catcher in Boston.

Overall, it has been a successful night in the draft for the Sox after Matt Barnes, a projected top five pick, fell to them at No. 19 and now the catcher of the future is picked at No. 26.

Swihart is committed to play at the University of Texas, but you’d have to think he will take the first round contract and sign with the Sox.

Red Sox Select Matt Barnes at No. 19

As a fellow Husky, I am proud to announce that the Boston Red Sox have selected RHP Matt Barnes out of UConn with the 19th overall pick. Barnes posted an 11-4 record with the Huskies this season with a 1.62 ERA and .177 OBA. Many projected Barnes as a top five pick, so the Sox are lucky he fell to them. Good luck with the Sox Matt!

Here is the video of Commissioner Bud Selig announcing the pick of Barnes.
