Words can’t describe what just happened. We are now 0-6. Lester pitched a gem, Bard blew it, Darnell MacDonald now has ownership of the bonehead play of the year. Get your shit together Sox, this whole losing thing is getting REAL old.
If you missed what MacDonald did, watch here.
In his first two at-bats with the Red Sox, Adrian Gonzalez is 2-2 with 3 RBI. If Theo isn’t on the phone with Gonzo’s agent right now hammering out that extension he should be fired. Get it done Theo, get it done!
In other news, Jon Lester’s career April struggles continue. Ugh!
Prior to today’s game against the Atlanta Braves, manager Terry Francona announced that Jon Lester will be the Red Sox opening day starter on April 1st against the Texas Rangers.
Based on his performance last season, 19-9 with a 3.25 ERA, the 27-year-old lefty has certainly earned the right to start on opening day.
Francona said this should come as no surprise to Lester as they had discussed it in the offseason.
“I don’t think that’s any surprise, and he’s known about it for a while,” Francona said. “I think he deserves it. I think he has that stature in the game right now where other teams probably look at him as No. 1.”
Lester is taking over for Josh Beckett, whom has started the past two opening days. Beckett struggled mightily this past season with just 6 wins and a 5.78 ERA.
Talking to WEEI, Beckett expressed his support for Lester as the opening day starter.
“The big lefty, he’s earned the right,” he said. “If they want him to start Opening Day, that’s his deal. It’s a big honor.
The time has definitely come for Beckett to pass the torch to Lester.
It’ll be interesting to see who follows Lester in the rotation. If it were up to me, I’d have Clay Buchholz, Beckett, John Lackey and Dice-K.

So apparently Josh Beckett was hit in the head with a ball while standing in the outfield earlier today. The culprit is said to be Red Sox staffer Ino Guerrero, who was too lazy to bring shagged balls back to the bucket so he was hitting them with a bat. Well one of those balls nailed Beckett in the head and Beckett was attended to by trainers as he walked off the field holding his head. Beckett is okay but how is this guy not fired? I mean he is trying to take out Josh Beckett. Clearly the Yankees hired him to do this or something. Get him out of Fort Meyers before he starts going after the real important guys like Jon Lester or Clay Buchholz or at least sick Pedroia’s feisty ass on him to teach him a lesson.
UPDATE: I just read that Ino is a friend of Manny Ramirez who is back in the AL East with the Rays. Maybe the Rays hired him to take out Beckett! But in all seriousness, it is being reported that Beckett is okay and was only hit with a stray ball that had bounced.
